Building Tariff Tribe: Empowering SMEs in the Energy Market

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are the backbone of the economy, driving innovation, employment, and growth. Yet, when it comes to energy procurement, they often find themselves at a disadvantage compared to larger businesses. Recognising this disparity, our team embarked on an ambitious journey to level the playing field for SMEs in the UK energy market. This journey led to the creation of Tariff Tribe, a platform poised to transform the way SMEs purchase energy.

The Need for Change

Our research revealed that SMEs are paying significantly more for energy - over 50% more for electricity and, in some instances, over 200% more for gas compared to their larger counterparts. This discrepancy is largely due to inadequate regulation and the predatory practices of some energy brokers exploiting regulatory gaps. The complex and opaque nature of the energy market leaves SMEs struggling to navigate through a myriad of tariffs and options, often resulting in them paying unfairly high prices.

Tariff Tribe: The Solution

Tariff Tribe is a direct response to the challenges faced by SMEs. Developed through the Non-Domestic Smarter Tariff Comparisons (NDSTC) programme, part of the DESNZ Net Zero Innovation Portfolio, Tariff Tribe is a software platform that connects SMEs with energy suppliers. It leverages the collective bargaining power of SMEs and optimised bundles to ensure competitive pricing and foster a transparent marketplace for new tariff structures.

The platform uses SMEs' consumption patterns to create optimised bundles of businesses against which suppliers can offer customised tariffs. This encourages the adoption of Time of Use (ToU) tariffs and other innovative energy solutions, driving innovation and efficiency in the energy sector.

Key Benefits of Tariff Tribe

  • Competitive Pricing: By grouping SMEs into bundles, Tariff Tribe reduces both volume and credit risk for energy suppliers, which in turn enhances competitive pricing for SMEs.
  • Market Transparency: The auction process interface and algorithm introduce a competitive bidding process in an opaque market, allowing both suppliers and SMEs to understand the equilibrium market price.
  • Innovative Tariffs: Advanced bundling algorithms for ToU tariffs create bundled offerings that are attractive to suppliers, encouraging them to propose innovative ToU tariff offers.

Why We're Building Tariff Tribe

Building Tariff Tribe is not just about creating a new software platform; it's about empowering SMEs to navigate the energy market confidently and effectively. It's about bringing transparency to a historically opaque market and driving competition that benefits all parties involved. Our platform is designed to achieve more competitive and innovative tariff offerings through volume discounting and enabling suppliers to better understand and mitigate risk.

Looking Ahead

As we move forward with the development of Tariff Tribe, we are committed to addressing the real-world needs of SMEs and energy suppliers. Our goal is to make energy procurement a straightforward, transparent, and fair process for SMEs, ultimately leading to reduced energy costs and a more sustainable future.

The future of energy procurement for SMEs is bright, and with Tariff Tribe, we're taking a significant step towards a more equitable energy market. Together, we're not just changing how SMEs purchase energy; we're changing the energy landscape for the better.
